Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR, pronounced “fire”) is a standard describing data formats and elements and an application programming interface (API) for exchanging electronic health records. The data standard evolved from HL7, which pioneered the field of health data exchange.
Importantly, since its introduction a decade ago, it has become the globally accepted standard describing how to represent and exchange health data. There are eight reasons why FHIR is important for global health, and why digital health should be on FHIR.
